Career Prep/Work Program is a course that is focused on preparing students to be Career Ready as they pursue their post-secondary goals. Students will have the opportunity to take the necessary steps towards their goals by following a career path as they learn basic skills of job search, resume writing, job interviewing techniques, and following up with potential employers. The student will be required to maintain employment in the community of which they will be evaluated. This course will also allow students the opportunity to research the specifics of potential Colleges/Technical Schools and various branches of the Military depending on their particular individual post-secondary goals.

This week is National Counselors Appreciation Week. Your assignment for today is to show appreciation to our Counselor, Mrs. Dillon. Be creative and take time to really show your appreciation. Assignment: Think about the day you were first hired at your job; either it was during the interview, maybe during the time you were in training, or sometime early as you started working. What were your Employer's expectations of you? Answer completely in at least 3-5 complete sentences. 
 
After you complete that, do a google search on "employer expectations" and compare what you find to how you answered the question above. Write another 3-5 complete sentences comparing what you wrote with what you found in your search.

Job Hunter's Guide pg. 8-9. Read the directions on pg 8. When you get finished counting your interest group with the most checks, search for a different career based on that interest. Make sure it is different from your previous searches. You may use any of the websites we have used in class to conduct your search. (you will be answering the questions below) Below is the grading rubric:
 
Different Career than previously researched - 20 points
Answer the following questions on your paper from your research (in your own words!) - 35 points
 
  1. Will there be a strong demand for that career in the future? 
  2. What are the trends that could influence the demand in the future?
  3. Will there be local jobs in that field, or will you have to relocate?
  4. What skills, education, languages and experience are required in that field?
  5. Will the job pay enough?
  6. Will you find satisfaction in that career and will it be fulfilling?
  7. Do you have what it takes to be successful in that field?

Individual Assignment: pg. 7 Exercise 5: Financial Needs Assessment: Do a Google search on each of the Expenses in the first column to find out the average cost for that item per month for the San Angelo area. Once you fill out the cost of each monthly expense, calculate the total monthly expenses and the taxes. Due at the end of class.

Congratulations! You gave an awesome interview and the potential employer has just offered you a position in the company. However, you have had second thoughts for whatever reason or reasons. This week you will be preparing for your mock interview which will count as your six weeks test on Friday Nov. 2. Below are the questions you will be asked along with the grading rubric on the areas in which you will be graded during the mock interview. 
 
You will need to provide a written answer to each question that will be turned in (for a grade) prior to your interview on Nov. 2. This will also be used during the week as a guide to help you prepare. 
 
Mock Interview Questions:
1.  Tell me about yourself
2. What are your short term career goals? What are your long term career goals (5 years after graduation)?
3. What are your strongest skills that you can offer a future employer? What are your weaknesses and what steps are you taking to improve them?
4. Tell me about a time in which things weren't going very well on your job. How did you handle it?
5. What is the most important thing you learned (or are learning) in high school?
 
Mock Interview Grading Rubric: Total points available - 100
20 points - Dress professionally - Nice jeans, kaki pants, slacks; ladies may wear a skirt (stay in dress code) 
Nice button down shirt or polo type shirt; ladies may wear a nice blouse 
Close toed shoes
Make sure you don't wear anything distracting and/or wear strong smelling perfumes/colognes etc
 
20 points - Give the interviewer a firm hand shake (beginning and ending) make eye contact and introduce yourself
 
20 points- Speak slowly and clearly during interview; maintain eye contact and good posture
 
20 points- Avoid touching your face/hair; avoid tapping fingers, playing with hands or any objects in hands
 
20 points - Answer all questions in complete sentences and use proper English (no slang)

We will be researching the history of Homecoming this week. You will research a different topic each day. In order to receive full credit on each assignment you will have to meet all requirements of the following grading rubic:

1. You must use websites other than Wikipedia (Do Not use Wikipedia) - 20 points
2. You must include your name, date, title of the topic of the day - 20 points 
3. You must cite the title of the article you use, the url/website, and the author - 20 points
4. You must write in complete sentences and it must be at least 1/2 a page - 1 page as indicated - 20 points
