April 2022 – Grape Creek Eighth Grade Students Kayleigh Turner and Serene Rowland took 2^nd place with a project on Ozone Depletion at the FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) State Leadership Conference and Competition held April 7-9 in Dallas.  The win advances them to the FCCLA national competition June 28-July 4 in San Diego, CA where only the top two teams advance to that level.  The team placed 1^st with the project in regional competition held previously in Lubbock, TX.  This is the first year that Grape Creek Middle School students have been included in the district’s FCCLA program.

Grape Creek High School Senior Paloma Trujillo placed 3^rd in the regional and 7^th in the state Mystery Basket proficiency event.  Dylan Villafranco, a GCHS senior, placed 8th in the regional Mystery Basket competition.  Mystery Basket is a proficiency event that does not advance to the national level.

Junior Kolton Briley served as Grape Creek ISD’s voting delegate in providing input on important bylaw changes.  He also served on the Connection Team, taking photographs for the session slide shows and the Grape Creek chapter’s yearbook page. 

Sophomore Estrella Trujillo was elected Region I Vice President of Record in February and will attend officer training June 12-17 at Camp Allen in Navasota, TX where she will learn the office’s duties and help plan the Region I and State meetings for the 2022-2023 school year.  Estrella is the first student from Grape Creek to ever be elected as an FCCLA regional officer.  She also received recognition for completing all “Power of One” units this school year and earned a gold medal at the regional conference with her FCSA (Family Consumer Science Assessments) in Step One. The assessments are subject-oriented tests based on specific areas of the FCCLA programs.  “Power of One” is an activity that allows the student to set their own goals and create a project to help achieve those goals.
